Kinshasa's secret operation to neutralise FDLR chief Omega

The DR Congo government has launched fresh military operations in North Kivu after a potential deal to ease tensions in the province fell through. They are no longer aimed solely at the M23 rebel group, but also at the Rwandan FDLR, one of Kinshasa's main allied forces in the conflict.

War in the east: Luanda makes headway in Kigali-Kinshasa talks

Angola's mediation has achieved significant progress in talks between eastern DRC's belligerent parties, even if its implementation on the ground remains elusive. After receiving Congolese and Rwandan heads of intelligence and military security - as well as an M23 delegation - Luanda is now set to host the two countries' foreign ministers.

War in the east: Congolese and Rwandan intelligence services close to finalising agreement

In the utmost secrecy and with Angolan mediation, the DRC and Rwandan spymasters met in Rubavu on 29 and 30 August. At the end of intense negotiations, they agreed on the outlines of a plan for the withdrawal of Rwandan troops and the ‘neutralisation' of the FDLR.

UN expert group details Kigali and Kampala's ongoing support for M23

Rwanda is understood to have considerably strengthened its military presence in eastern DRC, where its troops have now largely supplanted M23's combatants. Uganda, meanwhile, has come under fire on the strength of documented proof of its support for the rebellion.
