The rout of the Congolese army in North and South Kivu provinces by M23 rebels could have major repercussions in Ituri province, which borders Uganda. All the more so as Kampala is seeking to secure what it sees as its zone of influence inside the DRC.

Kagame-Tshisekedi meeting in Paris called off at last minute

France, aided by Qatar, sought to bring the Rwandan president and his DR Congo counterpart together for a meeting in Paris on 9 February to try to resolve the crisis in eastern DRC. But the encounter was cancelled after Tshisekedi changed his mind.

Faced with diplomatic paralysis, a joint EAC and SADC summit is being held in Tanzania this week. Since the M23 took control of Goma, French diplomats have been trying to set up a group of mediators to resolve the emergency in DR Congo.

Tshisekedi hunts for diplomatic strategy

The Congolese president is struggling to mobilise his dwindling support base, which no longer seems to believe in his ability to regain control after Rwandan-backed rebels captured Goma. He has turned to Angola and is banking on SADC as the last regional bloc capable of putting pressure on Kigali.

Following the seizure of the city by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, DR Congo President Félix Tshisekedi is trying to urgently plug a number of holes in his security system. Efforts are meanwhile being stepped up, from Nairobi to Paris, to try to clinch a ceasefire.
