Good connections within the French right and Franco-Moroccan business circles have helped the French ambassador gain acceptance in the country he professes to love, despite past tensions between Paris and Rabat. He is now seen as the lynchpin of their rapprochement, particularly on Western Sahara.

Race to head AU Commission in full swing in French-speaking bloc

Djibouti's foreign minister is the main challenger to former Kenyan PM Raila Odinga for the AU Commission chairmanship next year. Youssouf made the most of the 19th Francophonie Summit held in France earlier this month to rally support for his bid.
