As the Sahel security crisis worsens, with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) increasingly active, the states in the region find themselves in an ever more vulnerable position. In an attempt to stem the flow of jihadist propaganda which now risks overflowing into the coastal states, a number of security operations have been launched, among them Operation Barkhane, the G5 Sahel joint force, MINUSMA, and the Coalition for the Sahel. The French president spoke at length with his Algerian counterpart in late November. The two leaders agreed to gradually ease the tensions between them over the next few months. Meanwhile Paris and Algiers have resumed discussions of the Sahel. [...]

Major wheels set in motion ahead of Tebboune's state visit to France

After he spoke by phone with President Emmanuel Macron this week, it's looking increasingly certain that Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will pay an official visit to France. To pave the way, Algerian army chief Said Chengriha is due in Paris later this month, while a top French foreign ministry official is expected in Algiers.
