The third largest gold mining company in the world, AngloGold Ashanti came into being in 2004 through the merger of Anglogold, historically part of Ernest Oppenheimer’s empire, and Ashanti Goldfields. The company is active in Ghana and South Africa, as well as Mali, where it was one of the first operators to mine gold in Sabodala.
