French authorities are worried about growing tensions in Guinea following the disappearance of two activists critical of Mamadi Doumbouya's junta. Paris is keen not to alienate the government, but wants to avoid appearing in the frontline for fear of the situation deteriorating as in the neighbouring Sahel.

The interim president Mamadi Doumbouya has now asked for French support to secure the Mali-Guinean border, and although Paris is inclined to help, it remains concerned about the human rights situation in the country.
